A man was shot and killed Monday while forcing his way into a York County home, according to the sheriff’s office.
York-Poquoson sheriff’s deputies were called to the home, in the 300 block of Corvette Drive in the Creekside Landing neighborhood, around 5 p.m. At the scene, deputies found a man who had been shot by the owner of the house.
The man jumped the gate when the homeowner and his family were sitting out on their deck, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Shelley Ward. The family had retreated into their house and locked the door when the man started kicking down the door, Ward said. That’s when the homeowner shot the man.
The sheriff’s office confirmed Wednesday that the deceased is 20-year-old Antonio Beltran Flores Perez.
The sheriff’s office has not filed any charges in relation to the shooting, Ward said. The York County commonwealth’s attorney is tasked with determining whether the shooting is a justified homicide. The commonwealth’s attorney, Krystyn Reid, could not be reached Tuesday.
York County’s last homicide, a fatal shooting, happened in July 2021.
Tuesday afternoon, the Creekside Landing neighborhood where the shooting occurred appeared quiet. Children played in the street, cars drove by leisurely and neighbors went about their days. A man who answered the door where the incident happened declined to comment.
Neighbor Thomas Overby said he was glad the homeowner had a gun to protect his family.
“I don’t wish anybody bad but in that circumstance, I’m glad he had a gun and I’m glad he did what he did,” Overby said. “You know, he protected his family and that’s what guns are for, to protect you if you feel defenseless, you know? You got to protect yourself, whatever means necessary.”
Overby said he wasn’t home when the shooting occurred, but he saw police rush by his house on his security cameras, which he said he installed a few years ago after cars in the neighborhood were rifled through. He said the neighborhood is generally safe.
The sheriff’s office asked anyone that was in the area or had cameras around 4:30-5 p.m. on Monday to reach out if they saw anything suspicious. The Crime Line can be reached at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP and the sheriff’s office tip line at 757-890-4999.
